Percheron Mares from my Second Equine Tour with Katarzyna Om

I had the opportunity to photograph these amazing horses as part of an equine tour with Katarzyna Om. The tour happened during a cold snap with minus twenty five celsius being the ‘high’ for the week. Our visit at the ranch involved a fun drive out into the open fields where the herd of horses was being kept. The trees were covered in snow and the first thing we saw was a moose!! I knew it was going to be a good day.

It was a bit overwhelming to be standing among thirty or forty horses and trying to decide what to photograph first. These two mares solved the problem for me as they quietly stood off to one side and then slowly walked towards me.  I thought I had captured something special and I was right.

This photograph placed first in a local competition. It was then entered in the Canadian Association of Photographic Art where it received a gold medal and also a Merit Award for being one of three highest scoring images in that competition (just .5 points fewer than the top image). It was then entered in the Photographic Society of America where it received one of twelve merit awards.

This print will also be offered as a 48” x 32” canvas as part of a fundraiser to help support the art collections and program at the McMichael Art Gallery. This online Autumn Artisan Market is being organized by the volunteer group of the McMichael gallery. Dates are October 15 - 31, 2021. More information will be posted a bit closer to the date - here is the link - https://mcmichael.com/autumn-artisan-market-2021
