Mare in Sante Fe Light
A personal lesson in the power of light…
The stable was dark…or so I thought…
When we walked inside the stable, our workshop leader kept saying it was perfect light to shoot in. All I could see were dark stalls and I kept thinking why don't we go outside?? I thought maybe a flash set up was hiding somewhere in the dark. It wasn't.
Some of the horses had their heads over the stall doors and I thought well maybe that could be a shot because there was some faint light coming in from the windows. We watched as the workshop leader began shooting. One set up included having the horse tied up against the barn wall. The handler spent time to get the horse to lower its head or to turn its neck in a certain way. From where I was standing, it all just looked really awkward (until I saw the results).
Then I started to look at the back of my camera and I thought maybe there was some great light? I hadn't realized that the colour of the walls took on a golden glow and I just couldn't see it until I saw the result on the back screen of my camera.
This was the very first image that I edited from that shoot. It had the ‘Santa Fe light’ that he was taking about. It was an exceptional location.
I have also realized, looking back, that I was intimidated by the skill of the instructor. He was able to see the light and assess it and I just couldn’t see it until I was able to trust him and just try it.
There is an international salon, think online gallery, where thousands of photographers submit images in various categories. This image received a bronze medal. My Sante Fe mare. A turning point for my photographic journey.
