Walk This Way

a Journey to sable Island

An adventure with Adventure Canada!

In 2017, I was lucky enough to go with a few friends on a cruise from St. John's Newfoundland to Sable Island and back. Adventure Canada is one of the few companies who are allowed to visit Sable Island, just off the coast of Nova Scotia in Canada.

When I was growing up, I always heard about the Sable Island horses, however never expected to be able to experience seeing them in my lifetime. However, thanks to Adventure Canada with single cabins available, I was able to take part in the most amazing adventure.

Different trips depend on different bags to carry your Camera Equipment and for this trip I purchased a dry bag for my Camera gear. It really was a relief not to have to worry about my camera getting wet as the zodiac for getting ashore wasn't always the driest spot to be.

We were really lucky apparently because we had all four days to visit the island. Often fog is an issue and zodiacs are not able to land on the beaches. I will say that one day returning to ship seeing the crew use compasses to find the ship was ‘interesting’ and a tad disconcerting!

I wasn't sure what to expect as far as walking in the sand as we had been told it was quite tiring. It was better than I expected, and I didn't find the sand that deep.

On this trip, there were a lot of photographers. While I envied the 600 mm lenses, I was glad I wasn't carrying one!

Sort of odd how things work out. This trip took place when I was in the process of moving to London, Ontario from Toronto. I remember sitting in the hotel in St. John's thinking why am I here? I should be unpacking my boxes in London! I look back on my pictures and I'm glad I went!! The boxes had to wait!

This is one of the stallions on the island. All of the horses are considered a national treasure. Children from across Canada and the world wrote the Prime Minister to protect the horses from being used for dog meat (!). Access to the island, considered a national preserve, is strictly regulated.
