The Blue Series

it started with a blue rug and ended with blue images in my home studio.

feeling ‘the blue’

in newfoundland and the high arctic

A zodiac ride to the Ocean Endeavour , Adventure Canada.

Richard Martin, with workshop participants, Nfld.

EACH IMAGE HAS ITS OWN STORY…

  • This was a view from our zodiac as we toured around the Bay while we were waiting for the ice to clear from Resolute Bay. it was a beautiful iceberg and so I turned my camera and looked at the waves and the iceberg and created this shot. One of my favourites from the trip, High Arctic Explorer with Adventure Canada.

  • I think people believe that you have to travel far to get shots and this was one shot close to home that I was so thrilled with. It was the first snow and I went for a walk in Komoka Park. Thought I would try some multiple exposures and this is one of my favourites from that morning.

  • A trip to Gros Morne Park in Newfoundland with Richard Martin was full of amazing rock discoveries. still hard to believe that we spent hours on a beach filled with rocks and were disappointed we had to leave. I have never seen so many beautiful rocks and to have this beautiful blue was such a surprise.

  • This is another in the series of beautiful blue rocks from Newfoundland. I had no idea that these rocks even existed. The patterns were mesmerizing and the blue was such a bonus. I would go back just to see those blue rocks!

  • So many rocks, so little time. Hours and hours on the beach and the minutes flew by. Walking back to the car, most of us stopped for ‘just one more pic’. How is that possible after a three hour visit? These images were from the cliffs that towered above the beach and were such a beautiful blue. I think this may have been one of my ’just one more’ shots!

  • In 2023, I sailed with Adventure Canada on their High Arctic Excursion from Greenland to Resolute Bay. As the water was so calm, we were lucky to head out in the zodiacs and see this magnificent glacier. Sadly though, there was ice melting and it was pouring down the side of the glacier. I wanted to highlight that vertical 'river' and created this image to show the effects of climate change in the Arctic. How many more glacier rivers will there be before the water stops running as no ice is left to melt.

  • My first trip to Waterton Lakes Park was in 2022 when I went on a small tour that also went to Banff and Jasper National Parks. My heart was in Waterton Lakes National Park and that is where I spend my time when I go back to Alberta. It was the patterns of the burned trees and the colours that caught my eye. Each year there is more growth as Waterton slowly becomes green again. Yes, devastation and also beauty.

  • I used 16 × 20 frames hung both horizontally and vertically. I had been trying for a long time to rearrrange my downstairs to get my studio set up and I finally did it with the help of a friend who helped rearrange furniture, etc and so I had to get the images printed and on the wall to finish the room!!

my studio images are 11x14 in 16x20 frames
