The Abstract Expression

The Skijoring Cowboy

Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Skijoring in Calgary was an extreme sport met with extreme weather. The atmosphere was intense - raw adrenaline, cheering crowds and powerful horses emerging from clouds of steam and thundering down a track pulling skiers behind them.

Standing along the fence for six hours each day, I had to set aside my expectations for the shots I had planned to get. Instead, I started looking for that five seconds as the horse and rider passed my vantage point. What  I noticed the most besides the grit of the horses, were the smiles of the cowboys along with a few frozen moustaches caked in ice. The cowgirls were also having a blast. A lost glove or hat and bare skin exposed to the cold temperatures didn’t seem to bother them. Minus 23 celsius is chilly.

A second Image for my Year of the Horse project.
