Norwegian Icicles

The Window in the Harbour

Why was my suitcase in Winnipeg?

Travel can be ‘interesting’ when your luggage takes a detour along with your waterproof (and warm) clothing needed for a photography workshop. When I landed in Norway, I watched every piece of luggage appear except mine!

This was the first time travelling with air tags and I was able to tell them where my bag was (Winnipeg). My bag had quite the journey from Toronto and finally reached me six days later.

Fortunately, the small village where I was staying had an outdoor clothing store so I was able to pick up some waterproof clothing. Luckily, the merino wool clothing I had with me came in handy while I waited for my suitcase to arrive! Amazing what you can manage when you have to!

People occasionally raise an eyebrow when I tell them I am travelling from winter in Canada to winter somewhere else. On this particular trip, I even questioned my decision as it was 15 days of snow, sleet, hail, rain and wind, sometimes all within an hour! Norway was worth it however, and I went back the next year! Loved (almost) every minute!

The resort where we stayed had a small harbour and one of the morning’s activities for the first workshop was to look for multiple exposure images in and around the docks.

This window with the icicles caught my eye. I used a multi exposure feature of my camera to combine several perspectives of the same window into one final image in the camera. I used that image as the basis to create the one above. The original colour was blue and with a few tweaks in Photoshop, the purples arrived! This is one of my favourite images from the trip.

Even though the participants were at the same locations, not one image was the same. This was a visual design workshop where each of us were using different techniques. Interpreting and creating something different is inspiring to me! Of course, on some workshops some images can be similar as you are recording a scene. I am surprised now to see that editing helps create these images. It brings to life what I felt when I first noticed the window.
