The Glacier

Our Changing World

Global Warming is Real

Our guides had told us that ice was melting in the Arctic, and it didn't seem to make sense because everywhere we looked there was snow and ice. And more snow and ice. The crew at our daily updates was telling us that we might not make it to Resolute Bay because of the ice cover. However, global warming was shown to us in a very impactful way and is the basis of this image.

Healthy glacier ice is compacted into a beautiful deep blue. When we were travelling by zodiac to get nearer to one of the glaciers, there was a beautiful waterfall effect of melting ice in a stream of water down the front of it. It was a unique photograph and I was excited to take it. Even more so when I found out the significance of colour and melting ice.

Apparently, as the ice is melting quickly, the deep glacier blue that used to be there turns a bit paler and then turns gray, and then the colour disappears and it is a clear stream of water, just as we were seeing.

The image above after seeing it on my computer, was not resonating with me. It was difficult trying to edit the photo as it was. Visually, the image didn't make sense to me so I flipped it. I now had my blue ‘mountains’ on top and the line of ice from the melting glacier disappeared into the ocean. It helped me connect to what I had seen and felt.

I thought we were really lucky to see such a unique phenomenon of the melting waterfall but unfortunately, not so lucky when you realize what it means. Global warming is real.

Mother Nature has drawn a line in the ice. The proof is there. We just have to see it.

Glacier blue, glacier grey, glacier gone.

Yes, I flipped the image!

Lately, I have been taking more behind the scenes video on my trips. Here is a short iPhone clip of our zodiac returning to the Ocean Endeavour. Even though our final destination, Resolute Bay, was blocked by ice, the calm waters of Baffin Bay made up for it (well, sort of).
