Life is Textured
Pasture Blues
A Lesson in Looking Locally
Heading home and then…
One of the reasons I used to avoid being a birdwatcher, is that it was so difficult to find birds as it was hit and miss. For me, if I'm going to photograph something I want to know it's going to be there.
I seem to be in the same situation with horses when I drive around London on backroads. Stopping by the side of a road becomes a tad ‘interesting’ as there is very little shoulder to park on safely. Vehicles speed past and I am sure I could have reached out to touch them - which I didn’t. Still similar to birding, as it was often a wild goose chase except it was horses. Made me realize how much work horse owners do for workshops. Stangely enough, horses in a pasture do not rear on command, gallop long enough to get a shot or stop eating long enough to get a shot. I won’t mention grooming - every speck of mud is in the image in all its high resolution beauty!
I rely a lot on intuition when I'm out driving around and for some reason, I decided to drive down this gravel road just north of London. I believe they were Standardbreds. They seemed fairly cooperative and I had a long lens so I was able to get this shot. No owners seemed to be about so wasn’t able to get permission so I didn’t stay long.
I knew I liked it as a plain photograph and then I thought maybe adding a texture would be the finishing touch and I believe it was.
This was one of the images submitted to an online fundraising auction hosted by the volunteers of the McMichael Art gallery. Very pleased that it was accepted for this juried event.
Normally, I would've had only one or two horses in a photograph however, with this one, it felt that they should all stay in the image. The use of the texture helped to bring out the two or three main horses in the middle and the background horses added a lot to the image.
And the best part? You don't necessarily have to travel to find great shots. Travelling locally has benefits. I also love birding and am much more patient if I don't actually see any birds, there's always something else to photograph!
