Out of the Dust

Three Bars Ranch, Cranbrook, B.C.

Practice makes perfect

This image was taken at the Thee Bars Ranch, in Cranbrook, British Columbia. I have gone there for three photography workshops and each time, there is a new perspective to photograph and also a chance to reconnect with the amazing staff, horses and food!!

One of my favourite things about the ranch is that even though you might be at the same locations for some of the shoots, each year is different. For this particular location, the horses run down the hill and you never know how many horses will come into view alhough they eventually all do!! It's also interesting to see which way the horses turn. I don't think they've come down that hill the same way twice! You really do have to be ready for anything!

As they go galloping by, you can really see the horses that stick together. Each horse usually has a favourite and they pair up and become best buddies. It's easy to find them in the herd of horses.

However, you get so engrossed in shooting, that you really forget how close they might be coming. We have a short iPhone clip of horses coming straight at us. I've always been told that horses do not want to step on you and that really was true as they scattered away from us. No, I was not screaming at them - just waving my arms around and maybe telling them to go away!

I know a lot of photographers prefer to keep going to new places. For me, I also enjoy going back to somewhere I've been before. I feel relaxed and can choose what I shoot with more intention. I know I have a whole week of locations coming up and I can actually decide to try a new perspective or a new lens. Nothing beats being familiar with what is going to happen, well, should happen.

Each season ranch hires wranglers from all over the world. It seems that a lot of Australian love to come and work in Canada and they add so much to the experience of being at the ranch.

The three times that I have been to the Three Bars Ranch, I am always so impressed that everyone seems to be smiling and having such a great time. They really do treat you like family.

Accommodations are in beautifully built log cabins and it's a lovely way to relax sitting on your front porch after shooting all morning. Lots of free time and lots of great activities. Can't wait to go back!
