Ready to Rock and Roll!
It was a Backlit Evening
It’s always interesting on a photo tour as a lot of times when tours are new, even the leader hasn’t been to some of the locations. A lot of scouting is done by email and it is amazing to see someone hit the ground running with various setups after just walking onto a property. So much to learn!
I think the thing that strikes me the most about these workshops is the use of light. It doesn’t seem to matter what time of day it is, the light seems to work in your favour. A run in a pasture can turn into a magical moment in the blink of an eye. You really have to keep your wits about you and watch. Not every shot is a keeper so you have to keep looking.
This location was mainly an open pasture. In the background were beautiful hills and it reminded me of Tuscany. A couple of horses were running at liberty and we were able to catch them at full gallop. This particular shot was a quick stop and then he was off again. Fast and furious comes to mind!
The variety of horses we get to capture on these trips really is amazing. They usually have several handlers available so that horses are brought out quickly and back in after we have taken our shots. That way it keeps the horses fresh and also keeps us fresh as photographers.
Sharing the back of our screens, helps us get inspired by what others have seen as well. Of course, seeing the back of the leaders screen is discouraging, as you keep thinking, I was right there and never got that. Then you realize there is always next time!
This workshop took place in Poland and we were lucky enough to see just how beautiful the countryside was. I remember one morning we were told it was a hike to the top of the hill and as we kept walking and walking and walking, we finally made it. After that, to me, I will remember that ‘hill’ in Polish means ‘mountain’!
One of the side benefits of travelling to a photography workshop is that you really get to see and experience the culture of that country. Poland is friendly and welcoming. So much to see and an experience that's on my list to return.
Let's hope travel gets back to normal and pricing comes down a bit. A lot of the flights I used to take, have increased in price by hundreds of dollars as in five hundreds!
