Mare in Sante Fe Light

Sante Fe, New Mexico

I remember going into an exceptionally dark barn. We were told it was a great spot to capture the light that Santa Fe is known for - high contrast shadows, deeply saturated colours - a natural soft box. I'm not sure how you find that ‘light’ when all you see is ‘dark.’

I  watched as a flea-bitten gray mare was brought into her stall. I decided to trust the process and took the shot. The magic happened when the file was edited. I guess the lesson was that the light is always there, you just have to look.

I was very happy to receive a bronze medal for “Mare in Sante Fe Light” from the International Association of Art Photographers. A turning point for my photographic journey.
